Romeo is a beautiful, pristine white cat. However, Jennifer has written one of the most compelling arguments I've ever seen for keeping cats indoors, sufficient reason alone for me to include him as a Cat of the Week. I hope others who read this, who might be on the fence about making their cats indoors-only will take the plunge. She writes, in part:
Romeo has been my best friend since 2002. I am convinced that God made him especially for me. In 2005, he developed Glaucoma as a result of a toxoplasmosis infection. This disease was transmitted to him when he dined upon a rodent. I swear I feed him - he just enjoyed doing the kitty cat serial killer thing. I have since domesticated him entirely. He only goes outdoors on a leash. He is the talk of the neighborhood when he struts his stuff along the streets like any dog would do. If there is one thing that I have learned is that he is living a very happy life as an indoor cat.
He came to me as a stray and I was afraid that I would kill his spirit if I made him an indoor cat. I eventually learned that allowing him to roam the hills was exposing him to so many dangers. I made the decision to keep him indoors after his

Bandit is a Snowshoe Siamese mix cat, who was given up along with his housemate, Chance when his owner relocated to New Jersey. Richard Partridge volunteers at Granville County Animal Shelter, and was concerned that the cats would be put down. Richard now fosters both cats, and hopes they can find forever homes with understanding, caring humans. Bandit is five years old, neutered, and fully vetted.
He has overcome traumatic events (attack by a dog when he was young, and later, Hurricane Katrina), and with Richard's patient, loving care, has come out of his shell and is becoming more assertive. Richard describes him as definitely being "a 'Watcha doin?' little fellow." He would like to see Bandit placed in a home with no young children, but with other cats to satisfy the Siamese's need for company. The ideal adopters would be a retired person or couple, or someone who works from home.
You can read more about Bandit, and if you live in North Carolina and have room in your heart and home to give this most deserving fellow a forever home, you can contact Richard by email (address given on Bandit's page.)
A side note: Richard also volunteers for Tailless Cat Rescue, and Cindy, its founder, has generously let him list both Bandit and Chance on her web site and Petfinder list.
The Cat Who Cried for Help is a timeless tome on the psychology of cats. For those of us who might view cats' behavioral quirks as "problems" (and I admit use of that term more often than I should), the title is a reminder that cats are not inherently bad, and when their behavior is undesirable from our human point of view, it really is a cry for help.
And help is exactly what Dr. Dodman offers here, help we can understand, so that we can help our own cats.
Please read my full review of this book so you will understand why I recommend it so enthusiastically.
A reader wrote about a sudden behavioral change in her male cat, which initiated during the time she and her husband were away on a trip. She wrote:
My husband and I were on a week-long vacation, the first time we've left our cat, Jimmy, since we adopted him six months ago. We did have Lisa, a close friend, stay with him while we were gone, because we didn't want to board him in a kennel. The minute we returned home, it was obvious that something was wrong. There was a very strong scent of urine all over the house. I am desperate for any information on how to remove urine stains from my rug as well as ways to keep this kind of incident from happening again. Can you help me?
Since this seemed like a two-part problem including both urine spraying and urinating outside the box, my reply went into considerable detail in order to cover both issues. This information should be helpful to anyone who has either problem with a male cat. Read my Reply
I missed Wordless Wednesday this week, but they're sure having fun over at Shelley Esaak's place. Shelley, the About.com Guide to Art History, posted a painting by George Caleb Bingham, with the title "Name That Animal" for her Wordless Wednesday feature.
Shelley initially pegged the animal sitting in the bow of the canoe as a cat, and (as the resident cat expert), I had to agree. After all, if it looks like a cat, walks like a cat, and talks like a cat, it must be a CAT, right? A whole lot of art (and animal) connoisseurs had their own opinions, though. One made a convincing argument that the rascal was a raccoon, reasoning that "coonskin caps" were very popular in that era. Another made a reasonable argument that it was a fox, pointing out that black fox pelts must have been rare, indeed. Others pointed out that it had to be a bear cub, and one intrepid canine fan thought it absolutely had to be a dog.
February is the last big push of winter, and represents the glistening snow that blankets the budding crocuses beneath. You won't feel cold at all, though, with a white February cat to warm your heart and your lap. Our February white cats reflect the pristine brilliance of snow, along with the purity of their souls.
Interesting genetic fact about white cats: Most, but not all, white cats with blue eyes are deaf. However odd-eyed (one blue and one green or yellow eye) are deaf only on the same side if their heads as the blue eye.

How To Tell if Your Cat is in Heat Female cats that are not spayed will eventually come into heat (technically called oestrus), and the signs are unambiguous, once you know what to look for. Here are some behavioral symptoms to watch for if you suspect your diva is in heat. It is important to remember that female kittens may have their first estrus cycle as early as four months old.
If you haven't already done so, watch the video of Sadie, the kitten, experiencing her first heat. (Sadie was spayed soon after.)

...from Pet Product News
Given the popularity of reality television, it was bound to happen: a realty show for animals. In this case, 10 cats living together in a specially designed home, The Meow Mix House in New York. What’s more, the cats will vie for a top job with The Meow Mix Co. The winner, to be selected by Internet voting, gets the job of “Feline Vice President of Research and Development,” responsible for taste-testing new products and lines.
The cats are from shelters all over the country, including Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas. Webcam filming in the house begins June 6. The cats’ antics will be broadcast on the Internet and producers were planning to use pop-up dialogue bubbles to liven things up.
The webcasts will feature Meow Mix products and other pet supply companies have donated items, such as bowls and beds, which will be displayed inside the house.
People can vote online for their favorite cats and the ones with the fewest votes will be booted out of the house, ala “Survivor.” Meow Mix assures that every cat will be given a permanent home, however.
The cat that gets the most votes will land the Meow Mix vice president job.

The San Antonio Express News published a story "Death by the Pound" in the Sunday 14 Nov 2004 newpaper. It has shocked and outraged many of the city's citizens who where completely unaware of this tax payer funded 'slaughterhouse' operating right in the middle of their city. The City of San Antonio will send more cats and dogs, per capita, to their deaths, than any other major city in the US! NEARLY 50,000!
This story will outrage you! If if doesn't, then this slide show certainly will!

I'm watching my local nightly news the day before yesterday and they had a news story about a little yellow kitten that was found paddling for it's life 3 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico! A passing boat noticed the little kitten and pulled it out of the water. It survived and has been adopted.
I can only think of two possibilities here.
1. The little kitten fell off a boat.
2. Some creep tossed a cat overboard.
Sad, statement on some citizens of this human race.

B.K.
If you've checked out the photo gallery you might have noticed a picture of a white three legged cat. His name is B.K., which used to stand for Broken Kitty. Now it stands for Brave Kitty! I will tell his story here. However, it's late and I've got to go to work tomorrow morning so check back here soon for the broken cat story.

The third and final ‘Norton’ book. I’ve read one review that called this book a “Life Changing Book”! After reading the other two ‘Norton’ books published in 1991 and 1993 and getting ‘to know’ Norton from them, I can say this was a powerful book for me. Published in 2001, Norton is sixteen years old and on his last journey. Cat person or not, this book will move you.

With my fondness for felines, and having read, “The Complete Cat”, you can imagine my surprise when I discovered Cleveland’s “Black Beauty Ranch” was right in my back yard, just southeast of Dallas! I had to take the ranch tour and buy this book! “Ranch of Dreams” contains remarkable stories of amazing animals. Read this book about these animals…then meet them during your next visit to northeast Texas!

While “The Cat Who Came for Christmas” is the perfect gift book, this is the book to read and add to your library. Cleveland’s three classic books, “The Cat Who Came for Christmas”, The Cat And The Curmudgeon” and the “The Best Cat Ever”, compiled into one volume. Here’s your chance to meet Cleveland and his cat Polar Bear. This was my first ‘true story’ cat book, and Polar Bear is still my favorite celebrity cat.

opinions
Twice this week on my drive to work in the morning, I've passed road kill. DEAD CATS! For the past 6 years I've driven the same route and up to now have not seen any dead cats...thats why two in the same week is really weird and disturbing. The first one I saw was smashed pretty bad, the second one a couple of days later was a clean yellow tabby. Obviously, a case of an irresponsible owner. I wondered did they both belong to the same owner? In any case, it's a pet peeve of mine. Your cat belongs indoors. If you don't love your cat enough to keep it inside, then you don't deserve to have a cat. I read somewhere the average life span of an outdoor cat is 5 years old, compared to an indoor cat that lives an average of 12 years old.
Okay so you're the type that thinks you can do as you wish with your pet and you don't care if your cat dies an early death. You still owe it to your neighbors to keep your cat indoors. I love cats, however, I don't appreciate your cat's paw prints on the hood of my car...or the stink left behind in my garden. You can't justify letting your cat roam free outdoors.

Let's face it, you just don't find too many men on the construction site or around the water cooler at the office talking about their cat.
Whatever the reason it's much easier for men to discuss their weekend adventures with their dog. Just a fact of life I find very interesting.
